She Takes Flight

Recently, our plan was to submit Betty Anne Guadalupe’s piece from The Wardrobe Meets the Wall Collection: She Takes Flight (2013) for consideration in SAQA’s upcoming fiber art show: Blending Poetry and Cloth. However the submission guidelines stipulated that the piece had to be made between October 1st, 2014 and June 30th, 2015, so She Takes Flight was not eligible for submission.

Although the quilt will not be part of the Blending Poetry and Cloth exhibit, we would like to share the poem Tierney Davis Hogan wrote for submission with the piece.

According to Tierney:

“I witnessed the evolution of this piece from its original creation (when it was just a concept of Betty Anne’s design wall in her studio) through completion. I was completely in love with this quilt and I cannot tell you specifically why except that it gives me a feeling of growth, movement and possibilities. When Betty Anne named the quilt “She Takes Flight” then I knew I was truly connected to this quilt – it represented my ongoing journey from traditional quilter to art quilter.”

SHE TAKES FLIGHT

She did not know about them…
The Wings.
She felt a lightness,
a buoyancy growing inside of her,
as she experimented with her art.
Then it happened…
She felt them sweetly sprout,
all at once in a joyous burst of feathers.
Her Wings.
And now…
She takes flight.
